This project aims to explore the potential and applicability of innovative tools for control towers and more specifically, the possible application of Augmented Reality (AR) tools for towers. Augmented Reality tools intend to provide support and to enhance the tower tasks which, nowadays, can be limited or/and negatively influenced by poor visibility conditions, such as bad weather, fog, areas of the aerodrome occluded by buildings, etc.
Deep Blue role
Deep Blue is involved in the definition of the operational requirements entailing the "look out of the tower window", that is, what, when and why tower controllers make use of direct visual observation in order to manage aerodrome traffic. This definition is based on literature studies and original field observations and provides the essential basis for the design characterization of AR tools for tower.
Deep Blue is also providing support to the Augmented Reality project team, in terms of experimental design and quantitative approaches to the evaluation of AR technological solutions.
