    Alghero New ATS Route Network

The Alghero New ATS Route Network project was intended to assess the operability and controllers’ initial acceptability of applying a new route network in the EW Sector of Rome Area Control Centre (ACC).

The new network under investigation was the results of two years of work within Cross Border Cooperation Working Group (CBCWG), involving the team of experts nominated by ENAV (Italian ANSP) and DSNA (French ANSP). The new network was intended to cancel the buffer area in place today between the two Centres, smoothing the traffic over Alghero VOR, favouring the traffic exchange between Rome and Marseille ACCs in line with the principals of the Flight Efficency Plan.

In the framework of the project ENAV and DSNA agreed to separately evaluate the local acceptability of the new Network, organising dedicated evaluation sessions.

ENAV organised two evaluation sessions at Rome ACC. They consisted in small scale human-in-the-loop prototyping sessions. The two sessions were carried out respectively in November 2008 and February 2009. The new ATS Route Network tested during the first prototyping session was refined following the controllers’ feedback collected during the study. As consequence a second prototyping session was then arranged in order to evaluate the improvement proposed.

The project was managed by ENAV Headquarter, with extensive cooperation of Rome ACC, ENAV CNS/ATM Experimental Centre and Marseille ACC.

Deep Blue was involved in the project as responsible for the validation activities associated to the prototyping sessions carried out at Rome ACC. The CRIA© validation approach was applied in the project.
