FAROS is an European project, funded by European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme.

In FAROS the Risk-Based Design (RBD) methodology will be used to integrate human elements into the ship safety framework and deliver ship concepts that are safe, economic and green.
The majority of maritime accidents (collision, grounding, fire, etc.) are routinely attributed to human error: figures from the literature refer that between 80% and 96% of major accidents and disasters are related to errors of judgment, inadequate watch keeping, and low compliance with regulations. Accidents contribute to the risk of injury or loss of life of passengers (societal risk) and injury or fatality of crew members (personal risks).

The main objective of the FAROS project is twofold:

to link global design factors such as ship motion, noise, vibration, fumes, lighting and temperature to crew performance failure modes (e.g., fatigue, stress etc.)

to optimize multi-disciplinary ship performance using state-of-the-art tools, methods and empirical knowledge

The FAROS framework will integrate human factors aspects into ship design projects, by applying the new implemented Risk-Based design platform in cargo and passenger ship concepts with the design objectives of maximising life-cycle economics, safety and environmental friendliness.

Deep Blue Role
Deep Blue brings the expertise of its collaborators in Human Factors and Risk Analysis, based on a wide-ranging experience in the Aviation domain. Deep Blue leads WP4 wherein the risk models with integrated crew performance will be developed. Deep Blue is also contributor to WP3 (Crew Performance Studies) and WP7 (Cross-validation via Physical and Virtual Experiments).

Call for position paper HCI-Aero: Human Factors for Reduced-Crew Operations (deadline 15th of June 2012)
HCI Aero 2012 – Workshop "Human Factors for Reduced-Crew Operations"
Brussels, Belgium September 12-14, 2012

Within the HCI Aero 2012, the ALICIA project is organising a two half days workshop on "Human factors for Reduced Crew Operations".

General description
The workshop will address the topic of Reduced-crew concepts (RCC), from the point of view of:
 – Cockpit technologies,
 – Human Factors methods for the design and evaluation of these concepts
 – The impact of cockpit modifications on the overall system (including both aeronautic and Air Traffic Management domains).

The workshop is organised in three modules, enabling a coherent and systemic approach that takes a continuum of issues into account: from the cockpit through to the whole aviation system. Presentations of ideas will be interspersed with debate sessions. The debate and discussion points will be collated and disseminated to interested parties.
More information about the contents, structure and goals of the workshop are available here.

Position Papers
Participants should submit a position paper describing the contents of their contributions, suggesting views, examples and approaches relevant to the chosen module. The organisers of the workshop will selected the most relevant contributions on the workshop topics. It is expected that two to four contributions per module will be chosen.

1. Contribution to Module one: examples of technologies or studies about technologies (or comparison of different technologies) that are enablers for RCC. The topic can include, but is not limited to, technologies for reducing crew workload, complexity and scope for human error in the cockpit, replicating the actions of additional crew members and methods of facilitating increased interaction with functions based on the ground.
2. Contribution to Module two: studies on HF methods (or combination of methods) for designing, developing and evaluating reduced crewing concepts.
3. Contribution to Module three: studies on the impact of the reduced crew concept "outside" the cockpit, on the wider operations ecosystem.

Please submit 2-4 page position papers to: alicia@dblue.it by the 15th of June.
At least one author of each accepted position paper must attend the workshop and all participants must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference.

Target Audience
 - Academia (e.g. HF, psychology, engineering and management domains)
